Your reading life is yours
Privacy.
This policy explains how the Construe website and app handle information, including the services they rely on.
The short version
We don’t sell personal information or use advertising trackers. Scanned pages and personal reading notes stay on your device. Online dictionary lookups, optional purchases, and usage analytics involve the services described below. You can turn off usage analytics in the app.
Construe is currently in development. This policy covers this website and the app’s current development build; we’ll update it when data practices change.
This website
Construeapp.com is a static website hosted by Vercel. It does not have accounts, a mailing list, advertising, or analytics scripts, and we do not set cookies or use browser storage to track visitors. Fonts and images are served with the site.
Vercel receives the connection information needed to deliver and secure the website, such as your IP address, requested URL, browser information, and request time. Vercel may process and retain service and security logs under its privacy notice.
Your pages and personal collection
The app uses Apple’s on-device text recognition for camera scans and imported photos. Construe does not upload your page images, recognized passages, book collection, reflections, or personal notes to us.
Saved words, reading progress, and practice history are stored locally. There is no Construe account or app-managed cloud synchronization in the current build. Depending on your device settings, local app data may be included in backups managed by Apple.
Dictionary lookups
The bundled editorial dictionary and previously saved entries can be read offline. For other definitions, the app sends the word or short phrase you request to FreeDictionaryAPI.com. The provider receives normal connection information, including your IP address. Your surrounding passage and personal notes are not part of that request.
Links to dictionary sources, licenses, or other websites open services governed by their own policies. The optional iOS dictionary is provided by Apple.
Optional tips and purchases
The app includes an optional tip jar. When purchasing is enabled, Apple processes payments and RevenueCat helps validate and manage transactions. RevenueCat uses a generated app user identifier and purchase information; its service may also process technical request and app information. This can happen when the purchase service initializes, even if you don’t complete a tip.
Construe does not receive your payment card details, and we do not send RevenueCat your scanned text or reading notes. See RevenueCat’s privacy policy and Apple’s privacy policy. The current development configuration does not enable purchases.
App usage analytics
The app uses TelemetryDeck to help us understand which features readers use and where an operation fails. Analytics is enabled by default. You can turn it off in the introduction or in Settings → Help improve Construe to stop new usage signals.
Signals contain a hashed device identifier, session and app information, technical details such as operating system and device type, and coarse events such as completing a scan, saving a word, or finishing practice. We do not include lookup terms, scanned images or text, book titles, personal notes, email addresses, or payment identifiers in these events. We do not set a custom user identity or connect analytics to advertising.
TelemetryDeck processes this information under its own privacy policy. Disabling analytics stops new signals; it does not recall signals already queued or received by the service. This website does not run TelemetryDeck or other analytics scripts.
Permissions and your choices
- Camera: requested when you choose to scan a page. You can use pasted text or selected photos instead.
- Photos: the system picker shares only the images you select.
- Notifications: optional local reminders for vocabulary practice. You can turn them off in iOS Settings.
- Your collection: remove saved items, clear recent lookups, export readable Markdown and CSV documents, or create a restorable JSON backup in Settings → Backup & restore.
Backups contain your words, notes, passages, books, lookup history, and practice history. They are not encrypted by Construe. You choose where to save or share them through Files; a cloud storage provider you choose may receive the file. Restoring adds missing records and preserves records already in your library. App preferences and notification settings are not included.
Deleting the app removes its local collection. Copies you export or include in device backups may remain until you remove them separately. Make a restorable backup before deleting the app if you want to keep your collection. We cannot retrieve a collection stored only on your device.
When you contact us
If you contact support, we receive the information you choose to share, such as your email address, name, message, and attachments. We use it to respond, investigate problems, and improve Construe. Our shared support form is currently hosted on the Weather Nerd website and uses Resend to deliver messages; its privacy policy and Resend’s privacy policy also apply.
We retain correspondence as needed to handle your request, maintain relevant support records, and meet applicable obligations. Please avoid including sensitive reading material or unrelated personal information. You can contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of information you have sent, subject to applicable requirements.
Service providers and data location
We use the providers described here to deliver the website, answer support requests, provide dictionary definitions, understand app usage, and manage optional purchases. They may process information outside Canada. Their respective policies explain their processing and retention practices. We do not use these services to sell your reading activity or target you with advertising.
Changes and contact
We’ll update this page and its date if our practices change. Material app changes will also be described in the release notes.
